Over the years I have done a lot of perfume reviews. They’re actually the hardest product reviews for me to write, not everyone smells the same things with a perfume and I’ve had readers complain that a perfume smells differently on them than on me! Your own body’s chemistry has a lot to do with how a fragrance smells on you. I’ll be featuring a lot more fragrance reviews in the future!
What Are Those Notes You Talk About?
You may have noticed that all of my fragrance reviews feature a list of notes. I try to include as much information as I can about the scents included in a fragrance. Some people seek out specific notes or try to avoid others. Personally, I love Bergamot but if there’s a lot of Pink Pepper I can’t stand to wear a fragrance!
There are three different kinds of notes, and while they work together to create a fragrance, their prominence changes over time.
In general, fragrance notes will follow each other sequentially as you wear your fragrance. However, the base notes are present a little bit initially and slowly become more prominent, the heart notes will blend into the top and base notes a bit, and the presence of one note can influence how much you smell another note.
Top/Head Notes
Top notes are smaller molecules that evaporate off of your skin the fastest. They’ll be the first thing you notice after applying your perfume, and hence they can really influence if you buy a perfume. They usually come on strong initially when you apply but are usually gone within 10-15 minutes but can linger for up to 30 minutes depending on the note. They are lighter and fresher scents.
Heart/Middle Notes
The middle notes are usually a bit more well rounded than the sharper head notes of a fragrance, and they’ll start to increase within about 10 minutes of applying the fragrance and last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. The mix of middle notes often includes warmer and spicier notes such as rosemary and juniper.
Base Notes
Base notes are much larger molecules and typically last the longest of all. They’ll slowly start appearing about 30 minutes after application, they add depth and help ground the last of the top notes and the middle notes. Base notes will stick around for hours after the middle notes have left, giving you a lasting impression of the fragrance.
