Pregnancy safe skincare can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products. The list has gotten so large that I’ve decided to start listing brands in their own individual posts.
Here you’ll find pregnancy safe products from Jurlique as of 6/23/2024. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria.
I do want to make a note about the essential oils and the blends. In theory, these are safe blends, but you shouldn’t go overboard. Dab a little tea tree oil on a pimple, but don’t cover your whole body with one of the blends. Large amounts of essential oils can be problematic. I’ve treated kids in my ICU due to essential oils, and lavender can act similarly to estrogen in large amounts. So, don’t overdo it!

Hello,
Thank-you so much for everything you provide! It’s so helpful. Would this jurilique one be ok? It seems to have fragrance. Thanks so much!!

Hi there,
Is it safe to use Herbal Recovery Antioxidant Face Oil during pregnancy and nursing? Thanks in advance!
Carthamus tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Persea gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Macadamia ternifolia Seed Oil, Glycine soja (Soybean) Oil, Rosa canina Fruit Oil, Vitis vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Chamomilla recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Spilanthes acmella Flower Extract, Equisetum arvense Extract, Fragrance/Parfum*, Daucus carota sativa (Carrot) Root Extract, Tocopherol, Retinyl Palmitate, Squalane, Bisabolol, -Carotene, Benzyl Alcohol*, Benzyl Benzoate*, Linalool*, Limonene*, Eugenol*, Farnesol*, Geraniol*. *From Natural Essential Oil.
Sorry, this has a retinoid. I would avoid it while pregnant for sure and while nursing if you’re conservative.
Hi there,
I’m a HUGE fan of your blog and wanted to say a big THANK YOU for all the time and effort you’ve dedicated to help moms everywhere.
I have a question about which I’ve done a lot of research and cannot find a clear answer. Can I use essential oils (blended in a carrier oil) during pregnancy, as a facial oil? I make my own face oil which I love, and it’s made of 2-3 carriers oils and a whole lot of essentials oils (ingredients below) and I’m wondering if any/all are toxic and/or if the oil is too strong, especially in the first trimester.
Ingredients: Carrier Oils: pure Vitamin E, Rosehip, Coconut oil. Approximately 1/4 cup each. Mixed well. I have also added around 2 tablespoons of Baobab oil, Marula Oil and Cacay Oil.
Essential oils (of which I use between 10-15 drops of each into the carrier solution): Ylang Ylang, lavender, geranium, clary sage, jasmine, frankincense, rose, sandalwood, lemon, helichrysum, carrot seed. There are also small amounts of palmarosa, abyssinian oil, raspberry seed oil, blue chamomile, Angelica root, and immortelle.
I use primarily Young Living essential oils, but carrier oils are from various brands, typically all pure.
I’m so confused and your help would be much appreciated. As you can imagine, I can’t find information on my specific question and product anywhere else!
I touch on essential oils already in this post: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
All of those should be fine, but be careful of additives in the oils as sometimes those aren’t safe.
Thank you so much for this, Doctor! I’m very grateful for your response. Indeed, I had read the post on what to avoid in pregnancy prior to my original post.
However, despite reading that most essential oils — apart from neem and willow bark — were safe, I was confused by your explanation (“I’m not a big fan of a lot of extracts in my skincare […] Many things can be more harmful especially in large amounts. I wouldn’t apply a lot of extracts or essential oils while pregnant”).
I wasn’t sure if my making my own face oil (with pure oils) would be considered “large amounts” within the meaning of your post, since you mentioned elsewhere that the “small amounts” of essential oils typically contained in commercial skincare products would be fine, but in my case, my face oil is almost exclusively made up of various pure essential oils diluted in carrier oils.
Any further thoughts? I typically would use around 10 drops of my facial oil twice a day (20 drops total). Would that qualify as “large amounts” within the meaning of your post?
Thank you again!
There isn’t any evidence for avoiding these oils/extracts during pregnancy really. A blend is definitely different than a pure extract or oil, and a couple of drops on your face isn’t what I would consider a large amount. I would consider using a couple of tablespoons of a pure extract in a sitting a large amount basically.
In my case, my hesitance is based upon a patient I had in my PICU about 7 years ago, a toddler who got into Tea Tree Oil and drank and put it all over his body. He was on the ventilator for several days, basically such altered mental status that he couldn’t support his own breathing. We waited it out and he was fine. But Tea tree oil is considered safe. He had obviously had an extreme amount of the oil (the entire PICU smelled of Tea Tree Oil that entire week), but that’s why I say to still avoid “big” amounts. We don’t have a threshold for that, but I would be conservative if possible. I don’t think your described usage is a big amount, I think you’re fine.
As well, pregnancy is considered a “sensitizing” time. Meaning, people develop reactions and allergies to ingredients they have previously been ok with using, and those reactions don’t necessarily disappear after delivery. The more ingredients and extracts you have in products (and truthfully, lots of extracts are known for causing reactions at baseline), the more likely you are to react to something. That’s a big part of the reason that I’m a proponent of simple, gentle skincare products during pregnancy if possible.
I hope all of that made sense.
This is so incredibly helpful, thank you! I’m very grateful for the time you’ve taken to review my posts and to publish such detailed and helpful replies. Thank you very much!
please is this ingredents okay for a nursing mom to use….
Deionised water, propylene glycol, EDTA ( Disodium), Metabisulphite, Sodium sulphites, Argan oil, Mineral oil, Silicon Oil, Vitaniacin complex, Vitamin E, Shea butter, Stearic Acid, Cetostearyl Alcohol, Emulsifying Wax, Carrot oil, Arbutin, Preservative, fragrance…. Thanks

Hi Christine,
Thank you for all the detailed information! I’ve been checking my products from your blog. I wonder perhaps you can give us some tips if there’s another name for Salicylate acid or other ingredients we need to take note so it’s easier for us to check as well. =)
Here’s one I’d like to check with you:
