You’ve included Augustinus Bader The Body Cream in the category of pregnancy-safe products, but their site cautions against it due to the presence of “verbena flower/leaf extract.” I’m certain you have already reviewed the ingredients and found them to meet your standards, I only ask about this particular ingredient because I happen to have a tub of this stuff in my cabinet and I’d love to be able to continue using it! I see you put The Cream into the category “Not Safe for Pregnancy or Nursing”. In their website, though, it says “The Rich Cream and The Cream are classified as safe to use during pregnancy.
Please note that The Cream does contain Retinyl Palmitate, this ingredient is included at a level which is classed as safe for pregnant women, however it is up to you to decide if you would like to use The Cream when pregnant, post-pregnancy and/or while breastfeeding, as it is an ingredient that some women prefer to avoid during this time.
We would recommend consulting with your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.”
I was just told by my OB today to avoid it, but I have been using it before I was pregnant till now (I’m 15 weeks and 6 days). Should I be worried? Honestly I just had a panic moment.

First, you should know that brands and physicians don’t always agree. I have info on these situations in this post:
pregnancy beauty FAQ. It is not uncommon for brands to claim something is safe when the mainstream medical community recommends avoidance, which is the case here. There is also info in there on if you’ve been using a product you shouldn’t be using.
Retinoids are the biggest ingredient that we have evidence supporting their danger during pregnancy. They are directly tied to birth defects. Due to this, the medical community recommends their avoidance during pregnancy. We don’t have “cut offs” at which we know something is safe. There is no evidence to support whatever cut off they are using, and no cut offs are accepted by physicians. I can’t do a study to say 1% retinoid is safe but 2% isn’t, the study is unethical to perform. Along those same thoughts, would a higher percent be ok if you applied to only half of your face? What about if it is your body? Which trimester, but then what if you have your dates wrong? What if you have an eczema flare up and your skin is absorbing ingredients more easily? It kind of goes on and on.
Because of those reasons, if there’s enough reason to think an ingredient is unsafe, we recommend complete avoidance. There’s not really a gradient of this, it’s an all or nothing thing.

Hi there, I’m a little confused about the Augustinus Bader Rich Cream. However, I was trying to figure out what the Tfc-8 is all about. I read this article that said, “Highly unsatisfied with this conclusion however: we did more digging. We found several patents granted to the Bader brand and in these extremely complex documents (despite our legal backgrounds!), we’ve found what appears to be a definition for Trigger Factor Complex.

I did not see it in ingredients and I understood that it is some technology of doing the product? Is it safe? It’s their own made up name for something in their products, I honestly couldn’t figure it out. I think it’s just one of the extracts. Per FDA rules to sell in the US they have to be clear and exact about what is in the products, and it can’t be some name they made up themselves, it needs to be the chemical name or something similar. When reading through the actual full ingredients they provide that information, so it’s easy to see when their products aren’t safe.

I’m not certain if the Leontopodium Alpinum Callus Culture Extract is a stem cell ingredient (and knowing them it is). Sometimes stem cells are listed this way, but not always. I would check into what the brand is claiming about stem cells in the product. My concerns are in this post: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy. It’s otherwise pregnancy safe, so it’s up to you to decide about your comfort level with stem cells.

With regards to the Eye Cream. My research tells me that Terminalia arjuna could be unsafe in pregnancy and nursing. Is that however when taken orally? Meaning that topical / in skincare is safe?

You can pretty much find info out there about avoiding everything possible, much of which isn’t based on much or the wrong route (yes, in this case it’s topical vs oral). It’s not considered an ingredient to avoid by the medical community. My list of ingredients that I screen out is very conservative and it’s here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
