Pregnancy Safe Products from Colorescience

Pregnancy safe beauty products can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products.

Here you’ll find pregnancy safe products from Colorescience as of 12/5/2022. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.

*Note, this is totally safe because it’s a powder. However, you will NOT get the SPF value you think you are getting when using it, as it takes an average of 1.2 g of powder to cover your face to approximate the coverage when they test the SPF (most people would need to use 14x the amount of powder that they actually apply). You are much better off using an actual sunscreen.

hi, i find your blog really helpful. it helped me choose my facial products easily. i have some questions for you.

    1) you mentioned that shampoos are generally safe. I like to leave my shampoo on until i am done with my body then i will wash them off together. Is this ok? Or should i wash the shampoo off immediately?

    2) are the pregnancy safe products safe on babies’ skin? i tried looking for articles but can’t find one that give me a solid answer.

    3) need your help to tell me if this product is safe to use,
ingredients: Triethylhexanoin, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (sweet almond) oil, Isotridecyl Isononanoate, Squalene, Avena Sativa (oat) Kernel oil, Hexanediol, Rubus Idaeus (raspberry) seed oil, Tocopherol Acetate, Limnanthes Alba (meadow foam) seed oil, Bisabolol, Palaver somniferum seed oil, bergamot oil, sweet orange oil, viola odorata leaf extract.

      1) You can keep doing what you’re doing as long as it’s a pregnancy safe shampoo. I do screen them as I mentioned because I’m not certain I agree with all OBs not to worry about hair products at all. I wouldn’t worry about things that are only on the shaft of the hair as it can’t absorb anything, but your scalp is just like other skin (and it’s very vascular), so things that are on your scalp I think should be screened.
      2) No, pregnancy safety and safe for baby are different. As a pediatrician, I recommend a very gentle, non-drying and ideally not fragranced product for baby (they have sensitive skin and are prone to reactions). These requirements won’t be met by all pregnancy safe products.
      3) Looks ok for pregnancy and nursing

    Hi there,

I wanted to clarify if the Colorescience total protection brush on shield and color balms are not safe for pregnancy as they have them on their website as safe to wear during pregnancy?

    Thanks so much!
    Melissa

    • 6.1.21
      Christine said:

I’ve only reviewed the products that are listed. The brush on shield is a powder and it’s specifically addressed in bold in the paragraphs above. If the product isn’t on the list anywhere (the color balms) then I didn’t review them on my last go around for various reasons (they may not have been released, or the ingredient list may not have available from a source I trust at the time).
If a product isn’t in the list it doesn’t mean it isn’t safe, it just means I didn’t review it.

Thanks for the info! I was just wondering why the all calm isn’t okay? I see you put glycolic acid but I read everywhere and my derm said that’s safe when pregnant. Just curious if I should change my routine. Thanks so much!

    • 8.11.21
      Christine said:

Glycolic acid isn’t universally accepted as safe by the medical community, it is highly absorbed (at least 28% in some studies) when used topically, and as it’s fairly small we think it goes systemic very easily. There’s no data specifically saying it is safe, and due to that many physicians say to avoid it. I’m on the conservative side (as my background is pediatrics and we get specific training in pregnancy/nursing safety we tend to be the more conservative as we are obviously very baby focused), your derm is less conservative.

Hi, Thank you for all of this great info! I have a question regarding EvenUp: Was is always on the unsafe for nursing list? I started using it when I started nursing, thinking it was safe to use again (as I stopped using it during pregnancy), but I see it’s on the no go list. Do you have more details about why and about Bidens Pilosa? I have melasma and could really benefit from this product – it’s one of my faves. Thank you!

    • 5.1.22
      Christine said:

I added Bidens Pilosa to the avoid list this spring (which is when Even up moved, I think it was added during the most recent product reformulation). Bidens acts via the same mechanism as chemical retinoids, so needs to be regarded as the same.

Note, the sunscreens aren’t listed here (titanium dioxide is at the very end, but that’s not it as it isn’t enough to make SPF 50), but it doesn’t matter as they wouldn’t change the safety category
