Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Murad

Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Murad

Pregnancy safe beauty products can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products.

Here you’ll find pregnancy safe products from Murad as of 3/16/2024. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.

FYI, Sephora and Murad have slightly different names for some products. I have used the names per Murad’s site. If you can’t find your product, try searching the page for a portion of the name.

These are new, you’re right! The first has a salicylate. The second has Cannabis Seed oil, and cannabis has known effects on babies (mostly THC but it hasn’t been fully teased out yet). No one has studied mode of exposure (topical vs smoking, etc) but I would use something else.

On the website for the Revitalixir Recovery Serum it says the cannabis sativa seed oil is also known as hemp seed oil.. i thought hemp seed oil is safe for pregnancy? So would this not be ok to use?

Also, are you able to create a tab for primark skincare and make up please

Can you provide a more detailed explanation on why the City Defense sunscreen is deemed unsafe? Is the retinyl palmitate the retinoid here? Is the risk affected by it not being an active ingredient? I’m especially curious because Murad sells this sunscreen as part of their kit specifically marketed to pregnant women. Thank you!

      • 6.29.24
        Christine said:

The retinyl palmitate is the retinoid.
Active vs inactive is misleading, it makes it sound like the “inactive” just sits there and does nothing, which isn’t the case. In the US when certain ingredients are being used in a product (but only for a certain purpose or at a specific amount), they get listed as “active”, because they’re considered a topical drug and are regulated by the FDA as such. The sunscreen ingredients in most products are there for SPF and are at a high enough concentration that they then become a drug, and therefore per labelling rules must be placed under active. But those ingredients under “inactive” aren’t magically inert. They still work and are there for a reason. Including the retinoid. So yes, it’s there and I screened it out. The label doesn’t matter because the inactive vs active is a stupid naming decision someone made decades ago in the FDA and it confuses a LOT of people, but the labelling doesn’t affect safety at all.

I don’t know why Murad would market a product with a retinoid to pregnant woman, but a lot of products are like that (such as Bio-Oil). This discussion will help with some of the confusion: Why does X Brand say this product is safe but you don’t think it is safe? (or Vice Versa)

I don’t comment on supplements, but I would strongly recommend talking to your physician about any supplements you take while trying to conceive, pregnant or nursing. In general we recommend using a prenatal (and only a prenatal) under those conditions as too much of certain vitamins (esp A) can cause issues.
