Yes, I still answer questions about product safety! You must follow these guidelines. Any rude comments or those not following the guidelines will be removed. This means full product name, ingredient list, and each product must either be on the proper brand page or the brand list page. I won't accept comments in the wrong spot.

You can check the pregnancy beauty FAQ for many answers. Also check out which makeup and hair products I think you should worry about. Additional info about: perfume, nail polish and sunless tanners

I’ve reviewed all of the products that I can locate as being available in the US. If you need me to review a product I have not reviewed, please review my guidelines here, which are also included in the post above. I need you to provide an ingredient list as I am NOT able to access lists from overseas, and as I am doing this as a favor for my readers, I simply don’t have enough time in the day to locate the exact product (many products have similar names. Today I have 50 comments to answer. Oh, and I’m on vacation with my family.)

    Hello Doctor:

I have a question, SKII Facial Treatment Mask has salicylate inside, so you said not ok for pregnancy but list it ok for nursing, but for Shiseido White Lucent Power Brightening mask, you list it as not safe for pregnancy or nursing, because you said it has Salicylate ( potassium Methoxysalicylate), you said it works via a similar action to Arbutin and Hydroquinone, so better to avoid till after nursing, so is it still ok to use SKII Facial Treatment Mask during nursing or no? Please clarify, thank you so much.

    • 8.25.19
      15mins said:

They have different salicylates that work very differently. The Potassium Methoxysalicylate is an ingredient developed and used only by Shiseido, the salicylate in the SKII mask is much more generic and doesn’t work that way. In general we say to avoid salicylates as they are similar to aspirin and in theory (and this is pretty theoretical since we’re including an entire family of chemicals basically) any others could have similar effects in utero. The warning about use while nursing was very specific for just that 1 salicylate, so my other recs for salicylates being ok for nursing but not pregnancy still stand.

    Hi,

I love SK-II products and am so glad you said most of their products are ok for pregnancy and nursing. I’m still a bit concerned about using them during nursing though because their products contain Pitera, which I associate with alcohol because they said that the Pitera ingredient was discovered at sake brewer and is a yeast strain. I think I just don’t understand what yeast strain means — is this alcohol related at all? Should I be worried about using it during nursing at all? Thanks much!

    • 12.24.19
      15mins said:

No, it’s just yeast related. They don’t get it from Sake any more. If you’re worried at all I would just switch to something else, it isn’t worth losing sleep over skincare!

    Hi Doctor!

I just watched a review about SK-II Facial treatment essence and it was said that this essence contains parabens. I checked what parabens can do and this was what I read: “ The concern with these chemicals is that scientific studies suggest that parabens can disrupt hormones in the body and harm fertility and reproductive organs, affect birth outcomes, and increase the risk of cancer. They can also cause skin irritation.”. Any comment regarding this? Im hesitant to use now, afraid it might cause some harmful side effects to me and most especially to the unborn child.

Also, my friend is asking, for ingredients that are considered harmful to use during pregnancy, do you recommend to stop it once pregnant only or would it be wise to stop it even before pregnancy (i.e. while planning to get pregnant)? Wondering how long ingredients stay in one’s bloodstream/system once absorbed in.

    Thank you so so much!

There’s discussion a bit on parabens in this post: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
Essentially, the small amount of evidence that there was in the literature has actually had findings subsequently that were the opposite and indicated safety (and often those later studies were better done), but it’s one of those things that there are are a lot of “wellness” and “healthy” bloggers out there that have decided to continue with their narrative that they need to be avoided and that anyone who reads all of the literature rather than just part of it is a “pharmacy shill” or something. In large part, parabens are regarded as safe by the medical community. But there are so many alternatives out there now so if you want to avoid them, you can easily do so.

We don’t have any data to suggest how long you need to avoid topical things before getting pregnant. Some say not to worry about it. Some say as long as 6 months or a year. Some discussion here: What about if I’m trying to conceive?
The one thing we DO have evidence for is that you need to have a good store of folic acid to have the best effect re: avoidance of neural tube defects. Best to have been taking a prenatal vitamin for months before TTC.
