This was one of the products I had trouble with because it sure does say glycolic acid and malic acid in the key ingredients (I was looking on Derm store too) and neither are listed in the full ingredient list. I believe they’re referring to natural sources in the extracts, which isn’t regarded as enough to be unsafe and we ignore them. So I put it under safe 🙂

All of the OBs I’ve talked to consider it something to avoid as it is highly absorbed (28% of topical glycolic acid in studies is absorbed systemically). There more discussion in my post on ingredients to avoid during pregnancy. As there isn’t hard data on safety the recommendation to avoid is made based on the absorption and some are more conservative than others. Note, I do list it in each product that has it, so if you feel comfortable with the ingredient that’s a decision you can make on your own.

I was using this product every day, I’m 4 months pregnant and I’m shaking now. My dermatologist checked the key ingredients and said it is safe to use, because is no danger dose of any acid or retinoids.

The discussion above that I already linked will be helpful, but Kojic Acid works through the same mechanisms as Hydroquinone and many in the medical community list it as something to avoid. Unfortunately the “key” ingredients often leave out important ingredients and they’re chosen by copy writers. This is why it is important to look at the entire ingredient list.
And you need to avoid all chemical sunscreens.

I was told Kojic Acid is safe to use during pregnancy and it can replace retinol products in brightening complexion.
Kojic acid can brighten the skin, but it is considered like hydroquinone and to be avoided during both pregnancy and nursing.

There really isn’t safety data for that ingredient either way. I’m a pediatrician so very biased to the conservative side, but my feeling is why risk issues in your baby for slightly lighter skin for a few months? Especially when Vitamin C, which we know is safe, arguably works better anyways?
Hi! My question is regarding the skinceuticals advanced pigment corrector. You have it listed as not safe during pregnancy, but ok for nursing. On dermstore they list this active ingredient as a derivative of hydroquinone: 1% Hydroxyphenoxy Propionic Acid. I know hydroquinone is controversial so I’m wondering if this is still safe while nursing? Thank you!
It’s hydroxyphenoxy propionic acid, which is considered far enough removed from hydroquinone that it isn’t an issue per everyone I asked about it. Hydroquinone is something that I screen for and it goes under avoid in both pregnancy and nursing.

I was just wonder why the equalizing toner from skinceuticles is on your safe list when it contains glycolic acid?
Is glycolic safe?
That’s one of the instances in which the key ingredients listed aren’t correct, and likely refer to the acid being in one of the extracts. If you look at the complete list of ingredients you’ll see glycolic acid isn’t listed as an ingredient. There’s more about this in my pregnancy beauty FAQ.
First, really appreciate what you have done here. I use the daily moisturizer and it is on your list of OK to use, however I was looking at the ingredients and retinyl palmitate is listed as an ingredient. From what I can tell based on limited research this is a form of Vitamin A (Retinol). What are your thoughts?

Are you looking on the packaging? I’ve only seen the list of ingredients here, which is the product I’ve screened. It doesn’t have a retinoid. Note products sometimes change formulations or may vary by country. There are also sometimes very similar products with different names.

These comments are from 2019, almost 2 years ago, and the commenter at the time was from out of the country (some brands vary ingredients by country). About a year ago my most recent review (April 2020) must have found a reformulation, hence it is listed there now. When I re-review I start with a fresh list and look at every product over again, I don’t look at the old list (I’m afraid I might be influenced by it), so I don’t really know where things move. Having said that, I haven’t moved anything on this list in probably 6 months at least, so it wasn’t a recent change. It likely moved with the April 2020 refresh.

However, she advised me that she doesn’t need to amend the formula because I’m not pregnant. So I am meant to stop all the bad ingredients when I am actively trying to conceive?

I would stop when you’re trying, as you could be pregnant without knowing. In addition, it’s advised to start taking prenatals in advance of conceiving if possible, to reduce the chances of vitamin deficiencies that are linked to birth defects.

You can pretty much find info out there about avoiding everything possible, much of which isn’t based on much. It’s not considered an ingredient to avoid by the medical community. It is marketed as a purifying mask with 5% hydroxy acid blend, noting key ingredients as Dimethicone, Titanium Dioxide, Lactic Acid, Essential Oils, Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Aloe Vera, Herbal Extracts, Glycolic Acid, Malic Acid. They aren’t listed in the actual ingredient list, they call them out as “key” ingredients as if they are there in large amounts. But they’re so little in extracts that we ignore them in there. Glycolic and Malic acid, if in high enough amounts and added on their own and therefore in the ingredient list, are ones I do recommend avoiding. But in extracts like this they’re not of concern.

Thank you soooo much! This is so helpful! I’ve spent weeks looking for my serums and figuring out if they are safe or not. I currently use the Phloretin CF and Retexturing Activator, however my dermatologist advised to discontinue the Retexturing Activator. Any thoughts why?

Hello, just wondering about the SkinCeuticals Physical Matte UV Defense SPF 50. It has an inactive ingredient of Dimethicone. I have read that it isn’t safe for pregnancy but is on your pregnancy safe list. Can you please clear this up for me? On my first trimester and really want to make sure I’m doing things right.

I’ve just purchased Simply Clean cleanser from Skinceuticals and looked at the ingredients listed on the packaging and it seems different to the ones listed on their website. I wonder if it’s still ok to use, please advise. Below are the ingredients on the product:

I have Emollience in my beauty closet and mine has a retinoid, but this list doesn’t. If you have this list then it is fine for pregnancy and nursing 🙂
Do you know if Emollience has changed its ingredients? I don’t see a retinoid in the ingredients in the website.
This was answered above in the comments, I think it recently underwent some changes but mine still says retinoid on it (and a friend who recently purchased said hers still said it too, we thought the whole thing was strange). I think it’s still out there with the retinoid in it, so I’ve left it listed there until I hear people are buying it consistently without the retinoid. You can check your own packaging and if you don’t see it then that’s great!
Is there any actual data regarding safety of kojic acid? Or is it lumped into unsafe category because it is a skin lightener? I have not been able to find any concrete data online – though many sites do say avoid in pregnancy/ breastfeeding.
What do you think about jessner peels while breastfeeding?

I don’t know about Jessner Peels, as there are a lot of different brands and it depends on the brand.
There’s no data specifically for Kojic Acid, but as it works via the same pathways as hydroquinone (which does have data), it is recommended to avoid. Vitamin C also helps to lighten but is safe, so it isn’t just skin lighteners.

I’m not pregnant yet, but I want this to happen at the next ovulation (within 10 days). Currently I’m using Glycolic Acid 10 Renew SkinCeuticals. Can I continue using and discontinue only when I am pregnant or should I cancel immediately? Is there any remnant of the product in our body?
I’d stop as soon as you start trying. We recommend behaving is if you’re pregnant as soon as you start trying to conceive

Hi, how do you feel about skinceuticals sunscreens having talc in their products? One of the reasons it stopped me from purchasing them at all even though I really wanted to buy it…I’m so disappointed. your input on this would be appreciated!
The talc doesn’t bother me, it’s in a very large number of products. As long as it isn’t in a powder that you willy nilly slap on and then inhale (a’la baby powder, something we stopped recommending decades ago), I wouldn’t worry about it.
Hello, i see CE ferulic is listed as safe but I have also read online that absorbic acid (found in CE ferulic) isn’t safe during pregnancy. May I ask if there is a certain amount that is safe? Please help! Thank you!
I think you’re referring to ascorbic acid, which is actually vitamin C and is fine.

Is has Licorice root extract but I think that’s the only thing that is not recommended and you wrote if that’s the only thing than it is considered safe. It’s on your safe list but I want to be sure on that 😊

It’s because most doctors don’t think it’s something you need to avoid. My list is conservative, but in my discussions with other physicians and reading the literature I didn’t feel compelled to add it to my list of things to avoid.

I see the resveratrol BE was deemed on your safe list, but I read negative articles about resveratrol and fetal development. Can you just ease my mind that this one is safe and why please?
I don’t know any physicians that recommend avoiding it…The studies that are out there currently haven’t been large enough or well done enough that I’ve even heard any OBs or other physicians put this on their radar as something to avoid.
With the retexturizing activator, I’ve read that hydroxyethyl urea is pregnancy category C. Given that this is in a 25% concentration in the product, do you still deem it safe? Thanks.

I’ve recently bought the Skinceuticals Vitamin CE Ferulic. I’m waiting for it to come but just saw this article which says Ferulic Acid isn’t pregnant safe? The formulation seems to be the same ingredient-wise, but the “6%” worried me. Please let me know if you still think it’s okay.

Hello. Thank you so much for your help. I am relieved to hear that ce ferulic is considered safe during pregnancy and breast feeding. I just read an article in vogue suggesting women avoid ferulic acid use during pregnancy skin care. Any reason you know of that they would recommend against or is this just a difference of opinion? Thank you again.
Likely a difference of opinion, I don’t know of a particular reason to avoid. Ferulic can be difficult if you’re acne prone, so might cause more blemishes in pregnancy. But I’m unaware of any safety issues with evidence or many other physicians being worried about it.

I don’t remember. I very recently redid the list (in the last few weeks, the date is above in the post), and when that happens I start with a fresh list, rather than revising the old one. I don’t want the previous list to bias me when I’m reviewing everything. I start a fresh list, open the brand’s site and look at everything. This is meant to capture any reformulations that have taken place in the last year, but it also means I don’t know how things have moved around.

I am a bit scare now, as I used a sample of eye balm few days before I got pregnant or maybe few days when I already was pregnant, once a day next to my eyes.
I would never take it if I would know there is retinol in it. Usually it says on a box, and I would never assume it would be in this cream. I even checked the ingredients for this cream in my local Bluemercurry, because I am very careful with some ingredients. I feel so bad, that I did not see it in ingredient list.
I saw yesterday on your site, that it has retinol and went to the site of Skinceuticals and I asked them if it was safe, the lady actually told that there is not retinol and then I copied her a list with ingredients, she told sorry and told that it is not an active ingridient, but when I asked her if she can tell me the percentage of it , she told she can not.
I would appreciate if you tell me, if I was able to do something not well during this few days that I used it.

This definitely has a retinoid, and her statement about “active ingredient” is actually very misleading. When things are labelled as active/inactive that’s actually an FDA labelling thing for over the counter drugs, such as hydrocortisone, sunscreens, etc. Most retinoids aren’t considered over the counter drugs. Anything that isn’t on that list goes under “inactive” but it isn’t like it doesn’t work. “We’ve declared you inactive and therefore you don’t do a thing” just doesn’t work.
A few discussions that are relevant:
• But what about this % of an ingredient?
• You’ve been using a product with a “bad” ingredient
Given the timing of when you used the product, I’m especially not worried. I’m more wondering about the person that said it didn’t matter because it wasn’t active….because that’s a labelling issue that is completely irrelevant and she’s misinterpreted it.

2% is said to be “safe” by brands only because it’s the highest % that can be sold over the counter without a prescription. There’s no safety data to back that up.

First, I am very appreciated all your professional opinions from before I conceived until now breastfeeding. Secondly, May I ask about your professional opinion but none related product? I am still breast feeding my 11mos baby and will continue breast feeding him. However, I just got the Ultherapy done the pass Monday. Kinda worry about continue breastfeeding if it is safe after done Ultherapy? I have stopped breast feeding for almost 48hrs but not sure if I can breast feed still? Hopefully Ultherapy won’t affect. Could I get a help from your professional opinion?

They’re calling out something in the extracts. There isn’t enough of it in there to worry about from a safety perspective, you only need to worry if they’re listed as a chemical ingredient, which they aren’t.
Do you think Skinceuticals Simply Clean is a safer (cleaner) option than the ZO Gentle Cleanser?
There’s honestly no such thing as “clean” skincare. A lot of the ingredients targeted by this marketing ploy are well proven to be safe, they just happen to be older. Typically they have a lot more safety evidence behind them than the “safer” ingredients in this movement. I would use whatever is a good fit for your skin.

This is the retexturing activator. You stated it’s safe for pregnancy/nursing. But for some reason on their website description it says ‘20% glycolic acid treatment’. Not sure if it’s safe..

It’s not at all like retinol. You can pretty much find info out there about avoiding everything possible, much of which isn’t based on much.
