    Hi!

I use iS Clinical’s Reparative Moisture Emulsion see that it’s listed in your not pregnancy safe list. I ran all of my skincare products by my esthetician and she said all iS Clinical products are pregnancy safe and sent me this article to reference – https://www.isclinical.com/media/WhitePapers/pdf/WhitePapers_ProductsDurringPregnancy_and_Nursing.pdf

Thought I’d send to you for review and see what your thoughts are. I’d rather be safe than sorry, so if you still think it isn’t safe to use, I will discontinue.

Here are the ingredients again – you mentioned it has Retinoid so that’s why it’s unsafe.

Water/Aqua/Eau, Sodium Hyaluronate, Glycerin, Squalane, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Beta Vulgaris (Beet) Root Extract [Extrait De Racine De Betterave], Haberlea Rhodopensis Leaf Extract, Faex (Yeast) Extract [Extrait De Levure], Tocopherol, Panthenyl Triacetate, Ethyl Linoleate, Butylene Glycol, Acetyl Tyrosine, Proline, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Tripeptide-10 Citrulline, Tripeptide-1, Lecithin, Xanthan Gum, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Glycosaminoglycans, Urea, Glucose, Guanidine HCl, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceteareth-20, Dimethicone, Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline, Cyclomethicone, Polysorbate 40, Superoxide Dismutase, PVP, Panthenol, Phospholipids, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Pantothenic Acid, Ethylbisiminomethylguaiacol Manganese Chloride, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Disodium EDTA.

    Thanks!

Yes, this has a retinoid, which is actually the #1 ingredient to avoid during pregnancy and I know quite a few OB and Derms who recommend even avoiding during nursing. I have info here about why brands sometimes differ from my recs: Pregnancy beauty FAQ.

Hi! Do you know if their fire and ice facial is considered pregnancy safe? They are stating that it is bc it’s not systemic and doesn’t get into the bloodstream but I believe one of the ingredients is retinol….

        Thanks!

        • 5.29.24

Things get absorbed to varying amounts, and it can even change daily based on the person if your skin has different conditions (maybe you’re irritated one day, that can affect how much is absorbed). There’s enough evidence out there that topical treatments get absorbed that it’s pretty universal in the medical community to recommend avoiding certain ingredients, especially retinoids.
This discussion will help: Why does X Brand say this product is safe but you don’t think it is safe? (or Vice Versa)
As for that exact product, I need a full ingredient list to tell you it’s safety. But if it does have retinol I would avoid it in both pregnancy and nursing.

This does have a retinoid, so I would not recommend restarting it. The evidence for issues is all in oral, prescription strength retinoids and birth defects. The chances of an issue from an over the counter, topical version are much lower, though not a 0% possibility so we still recommend avoidance. I have more info on this kind of situation in this post: pregnancy beauty FAQ

Hello, thank you for your incredibly informative website and posts. I followed your guidance when I was pregnant and I am now breastfeeding. Can you provide more explanation as to why you include active serum on the BF safe list? Looking at the ingredients, it contains arbutin which you deem unsafe. Just want to make sure I am in the clear or whether I should stop the active serum. Thank you!

I’m a bit confused because the Active Serum contains Salix Alba (willow bark) and not salicylic acid. From what I’ve ready, sale alba is safe during pregnancy but the latter isn’t because its in the synthetic form. So shouldn’t the Active Serum be safe during pregnancy?

Im partially freaking out because I’ve been using the Active serum this whole pregnancy and I’m already 25 weeks 🙁

These are the ingredients I have for Active Serum:
Water/Aqua/Eau, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Alcohol Denat., Saccharum Officinarum (Sugarcane) Extract [Extrait De Canne à Sucre], Vaccinium Myrtillus Fruit/Leaf Extract, Triethanolamine, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Glyceryl Polyacrylate, Arbutin, Polyporus Umbellatus (Mushroom) Extract, Menthol, Phenoxyethanol

Note, I called out the willow bark as a salicylate (not salicylic acid, which is something different though is also a salicylate), which it is considered, and that’s something to avoid in pregnancy. As well, more concerning is the arbutin, which is something to avoid in pregnancy and nursing.

And here: You’ve been using a product with a “bad” ingredient

Hello! Thanks for all the info on your website, finding it very helpful. One question on the iS Clinical Cleansing Complex – when I had asked my OB about skincare last pregnancy, they said face washes were generally fine because they don’t stay on your skin and are rinsed off. Do you agree with that approach as it relates to this product, or still no because of the ingredients?

    Thanks!

Hi, firstly thank you for compiling these lists for us, you are so incredibly thorough. I have a question about iS clinicals. I see that on your list you’ve listed their eye serum, moisturizing complex and cleansing complex as unsafe for pregnancy or nursing. I know you’ve provided us a lot of information on various parts of your website, and I’ve tried to gather what I can but I’m still having a hard time understanding, do you mind summarizing why these 3 aren’t safe? Their website claims that all their products are pregancy safe. I just feel so confused right now. I used to use the gentle cleanser from the ZO line and the Ultra Nourishing moisturizer from the Alastin line, but at the derm office I go to, the aestheticians recommended I switch to these iS clinicals products (youth eye serum, moisturizing complex and cleaning complex) as they have been told they are guaranteed safe in pregnancy. But your research shows me that the ZO gentle cleanser and Alastin Ultra Nourishing Moisturizer is safe. I feel so confused.
