Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Drunk Elephant

Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Drunk Elephant

Pregnancy safe skincare can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products. The list has gotten so large that I’ve decided to start listing brands in their own individual posts.

Here you’ll find pregnancy safe skincare products from Drunk Elephant as of 7/18/2024. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. If they release a new product that is not listed here, please comment below and I will add it. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.

    • 4.14.19
      15mins said:

Some people use retinoids while nursing, but more and more lately I see OBs recommending avoidance during nursing. I’m not sure what the reasoning is (is it just a conservative interpretation of the avoidance during pregnancy and extending it longer?), I am unaware of any new studies that came out and I’ve looked quite a bit.

      • 11.7.19
        Casey York said:

From what I’ve read, use of retinol during pregnancy can result in a number of deformities. The studies seem to agree that within 2 weeks of last usage a woman is safe to conceive, but some suggest waiting one month since last use.

The night serum is listed in this post under not safe for pregnancy. Glycolic acid is highly absorbed by your skin (about 28% according to one study) and should be avoided during pregnancy. Please refer to my post on ingredients to avoid during pregnancy.

Hi Christine! I’m not 100% sure but I think drunk elephant changed formulas with the Beste Jelly Cleanser and now has licorice root in it. Here are the ingredients from their US website:

Ingredients: Water/Aqua/Eau, Glycerin, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Coco-Glucoside, Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Sodium Methyl Oleoyl Taurate, Propanediol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Glycolipids, Linoleic Acid, Linolenic Acid, Lauryl Glucoside, Cucumis Melo Cantalupensis Fruit Extract, Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Tocopherol, Citric Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Chloride, Polylysine

I thought I’d flag it since you get enough ingredient lists to sort through!!! Although I guess since it’s hardly on the skin for more than a minute, maybe it doesn’t matter? I don’t know.

    • 5.20.19
      15mins said:

Sigh. That is different. I’m glad you caught that! You’re right that cleanser usually isn’t on the skin for long, though some cleansers do leave a little bit of residue behind so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Why does Drunk Elephant recommend tlc during pregnancy then? Maybe the 1% salicylic isn’t significant? Idk but it’s really weird that there’s such split in opinions, it makes it so confusing for new moms like me. Is there any other product like the tlc then that’s safe?

    • 6.1.19
      15mins said:

It’s because there are differences in opinion regarding safety, there are very few actual studies that have been done, the real studies that would be ideal to prove safety are unethical to perform. So it’s all based on inference and assumptions. Salicylic Acid was on the list my OB told me to avoid, as were most of the ingredients I screen for now. But there are brands out there that will just claim their product is safe in order to sell more. I can think of an oil marketed to pregnant women that has retinoids right now, they advertise that it prevents stretch marks (nothing topical really works though). I’m on the conservative side for what I recommend.

    Hi,

Is the new F-Balm Eyetrolyte waterfacial mask safe?

4-Electrolyte Blend: Antioxidant-rich and powerful humectant ingredients (coconut water, sodium PCA, magnesium PCA, and prickly pear extract), electrolytes are vital to helping maintain hydration levels in skin, improving barrier strength and lipid content, calming redness, and protecting against environmental dehydration.
-Vitamin F: Soothing fatty acids (linolenic and linoleic) play a vital role in maintaining hydration levels, improving skin texture and suppleness, reducing redness, and improving acid-mantle strength.
-Niacinamide: AKA vitamin B3, niacinamide has a wide range of benefits, most notably its ability to improve signs of aging (fine lines, wrinkles, loss of firmness) as well as uneven tone and texture; research has demonstrated that niacinamide, even in low concentrations, can help strengthen a compromised skin barrier, boost skin’s synthesis of ceramides and cholesterol—both essential substances in barrier health and elasticity—and improve skin’s defenses against water loss.

This is a cell culture, not stem cells. The cell culture is basically a broth, there might be some cells in it but my understanding from discussing with different brands is that those are different things. My thoughts on stem cells are here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy. But, I doubt the stem cells can really penetrate down into the skin and interact the way some brands say (and none of them have ever shown me evidence that they actually work in that way). I’m mostly saying to exercise caution because they’re kind of an unknown. Most likely the cells are dead if they’re present (they’re not properly maintained in a jar of cream), and they sit on the surface of the skin.

My OBGYN said Glycolic Acid is safe during pregnancy…

It’s not universally accepted by all OBs and pediatricians as safe (I’m a pediatrician, we get very specific training regarding ingredient safety when used by mom). It’s absorbed at least 28% into the body and we don’t really have safety info beyond that. My list of ingredients to avoid during pregnancy is pretty conservative. Note, I put on each product the ingredient I was concerned about. If you’re fine with glycolic acid, you can easy see which products have just that ingredient as the one I was worried about.

If you consider Glycolic Acid as unsafe, why did you list the Sephora brand Glow Peel Pads as safe when it’s mainly glycolic acid? I should probably ask this on the Sephora page. Genuinely curious!!

It’s likely been reformulated, it was previously lactic acid based. I’m going to re-screen all of the Sephora products. The brand is overdue for that anyways, but I’m starting this am. There’s >400 products listed, so hopefully it won’t take forever!

Hi! I was wondering about DE’s new deodorant and how you feel about it. Also, if you have any pregnany-safe deodorant suggestions! Thank you.

-Mandelic Acid: Derived from almonds, mandelic acid is an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) that is both water and lipid-soluble, which is a quality that allows it to penetrate and work within the hair follicle; mandelic acid is also an excellent killer of odor-causing bacteria while being milder to skin than glycolic acid (due to its larger molecule size).
-Arrowroot Powder: Super-absorbent powder derived from the roots of the arrowroot plant.
-Shea Butter: A concentrated butter derived from the shea fruit; shea butter has a complex triglyceride composition that gives its characteristic rich, emollient properties and skin-barrier protection.

Water/Aqua/Eau, Mandelic Acid, Maranta Arundinacea Root Powder, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Isononyl Isononanoate, Glycerin, Tapioca Starch, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Cetearyl Olivate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Sorbitan Olivate, Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil, Adansonia Digitata Seed Oil, Schinziophyton Rautanenii Kernel Oil, Sclerotium Gum, Panthenol, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Seed Extract, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Citric Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Sodium Hydroxide.

There’s a post about pregnancy safe deodorants, in general most of the drugstore ones are fine, it’s when you try to go fancy or all natural that things aren’t safe for pregnancy.

I’m not certain if the Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract is a stem cell ingredient. Sometimes stem cells are listed this way, but not always. I would check into what the brand is claiming about stem cells in the product. My concerns are in this post: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy.

    Hello!

I love Drunk Elephant’s Protini Polypeptide Cream, but see it is deemed not safe due to glycolic acid. I reached out to DE customer service for more info and this is what they said:

“ The Lactic/Glycolic Acid Copolymer in Protini Cream is created by the co-polymerization (sticking together) of lactic and glycolic acid molecules. It is used as a suspension agent for the peptides – so, it is not acidic and has no exfoliation properties.”

Does that by chance change anything or would you still consider it not safe to use during pregnancy?

    Greatly appreciate your help!

    T.L.C. SUKARI BABYFACIAL™: 1.69 FL OZ

    – 25% AHA Blend of Glycolic + (T) Tartaric, (L) Lactic, and (C) Citric Acids: Exfoliates surface dead skin cells and revs up surface turnover to smooth and brighten the appearance of skin.

    – 2% Salicylic Acid (BHA): Penetrates and exfoliates inside pore walls as well as on the surface of the skin, unclogging pores, and providing greater skin clarity while also soothing redness.

    – Chickpea Flour: Balances and brightens skin’s appearance while combating dullness.

    – Matcha (Green Tea Leaf), Milk Thistle, and Apple Extracts: With potent antioxidant and anti-pollution properties, these extracts help condition and soothe skin.

    – Pumpkin Ferment Extract: A rich source of fatty acids and antioxidant carotenoids (like carotene and lutein), plus naturally occurring enzymes that aid in gentle exfoliation.

    – Pomegranate Extract: Potent antioxidant properties defend against pollution, free radicals, and other damaging environmental stressors.

    – Cactus Extract: Calms and soothes redness and sensitivity that results from exposure to topical AHAs.

    – Passionfruit Seed Oil: Has antioxidant properties, improves dryness and reduces redness.

    – Virgin Marula Oil: This super-absorbable oil, high in critical antioxidants and omegas 6 and 9, helps moisturize, nourish, and rejuvenate skin for a youthful glow.

    – Niacinamide: Aka vitamin B3, niacinamide has a wide range of benefits, most notably its ability to improve signs of aging (fine lines, wrinkles, loss of firmness) as well as uneven tone and texture.

    – Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer: With a smaller molecular weight than hyaluronic acid, this ingredient is able to deeply penetrate skin, delivering excellent hydration and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while promoting firmness.

Hi! I noticed the Drunk Elephant Ceramide AF cream has avocado oil and lists vitamin A – isn’t vitamin A to be avoided in pregnancy?

“ Avocado Oil: Oil extracted from the kernel of the avocado. Rich in essential unsaturated fatty acids and vitamins A, E and D, it is an excellent source of moisture and a skin-soother. Its high content of plant sterols makes it a powerful softener for dry, deprived skin.”
