That ingredient is different from formaldehyde (which incidentally is found in your body…). I’ve screened out the ingredients i think aren’t safe. That one is fine. My list of ingredients that I screen out is very conservative and it’s here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

Kaolin is clay, I’ve never called that one out as it’s definitely safe. Kojic Acid also starts with K and needs to be avoided in both pregnancy and nursing.

For the Clearcalm Invisible Pores Detox Mask-
There is Kaolin in the ingredient, I saw that sometime you call out this ingredient in some products, buy why not this one? Just want to understand better.
Thank you so much!

I have a question about this product:
REN GLYCOL LACTIC RADIANCE RENEWAL MASK
It’s on the safe list but there is an ingredient SODIUM HYDROXYMETHYLGLYCINAT (sort of Formaldehyde?) And on their website, they mentioned it is not recommended for sensitive skin.
Is this still safe for pregnancy?
Thank you.

You’re using the chemistry term alcohol interchangeably with the lay person’s term alcohol. A chemical is called an alcohol if they have an OH group attached to them. They’re often very, very different and don’t absorb or interact the same way in our bodies, they aren’t associated with fetal alcohol syndrome, etc. There are many alcohols also found naturally in your body.

I didn’t see this in your guide, sorry if I missed it, but wondered why alcohols are considered safe by brands during pregnancy? Eg I can see Ren use Cetyl alcohol in their products, and most other brands use a type of alcohol. I’ve read fatty alcohols such as this are not drying but given all the focus on not ingesting alcohol during pregnancy it’s a bit frightening to see it on ingredient lists. Thanks in advance!

Bidens Pilosa and Bakuchiol actually work through the exact same mechanism as actual retinoids. Brands have been out there saying they’re safe but… they’re new and have no evidence themselves. But if they’re working through the same mechanism of action it’s a pretty safe bet to think they have the same issues as a retinoid.

I can’t find anything to say that BP is harmful – do you know what it is that makes it unsafe, or is it listed as a precaution? Thanks in advance!
