Vitamin C is highly underrated in skincare. For real. It acts as an antioxidant, helps increase collagen production (this is music to my ears as I seem to continually be marching into my 40’s) and it even helps fight hyperpigmentation. I have an entire post about how Vitamin C works in skincare, if you want to learn more about it.
One of the beautiful things about Vitamin C is that it is pregnancy safe. So many of the best skincare ingredients need to be avoided during pregnancy, such as retinoids. Vitamin C fights a lot of common skin issues such as hyperpigmentation, it increases collagen production and prevents skin damage from reactive oxygen species.
I’ll be adding to this list of pregnancy safe Vitamin C products over time, but for now here are a few of my favorites. Before asking about your favorite, product, please check the big brand list of pregnancy safe products. Many comments here are asking for products that are already screened, you will find your answer there much faster.
My current favorite of these products is the Volition Beauty Strawberry-C Serum. It has light hydration and sinks into my skin very quickly! There’s no residue left behind, so it works great under makeup. I apply it nightly for sure, but I’ll use it after spending a couple of hours outside.

With the retinoid definitely not ok for pregnancy, some would avoid in nursing, it depends on how conservative you are.

Previously yes, but the thought in the medical community (OBs and Pediatricians) has been trending more towards avoidance during nursing as well. I don’t know why exactly (no new evidence in the literature that I’ve seen), but the more conservative thought has been to avoid in nursing as well. This is why I started screening out retinoids with the disclaimer that you might want to consider avoiding them in nursing as well. For the last year or so they’ve appeared under “not safe in pregnancy or nursing” in my product lists.

hi doc! it’s me again.. so I just bought The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Sphere 2% (which is on your list of pregnancy safe products) but then I read somewhere that Vit C + Sodium Benzoate is carsinogenic and I just double checked my moisturizer/facial wash and it has Sodium Benzoate in it. what do you think about it?

Note that my list of ingredients is very conservative for the mainstream medical community.
I would not be screening things as safe if I was worried about them.

I did see that it has some “plant stem cells” in it and have noticed stem cells are on your list of skin care ingredients to avoid. If it’s not recommended for pregnancy, would the same go for breastfeeding?
It’s not one of those things with any data out there, it’s something that I think in theory could be an issue, and it makes me nervous enough that I put it on my list (which is pretty nervous). Things cross the placenta a lot more easily than into breast milk, things basically need to be purposefully secreted into the milk. I’m less worried about that. I’m not sure that helps, it’s all me being uncomfortable with something.

Hi, I wanted to get your opinion on using the following two products.
Both of them contain cloudberry. Apparently (according to Wikipedia) “Cloudberries are rich in vitamin C and ellagic acid,[1] citric acid, malic acid, α-tocopherol, anthocyanins and the provitamin A carotenoid, β-carotene in contents which differ across regions of Finland due to sunlight exposure, rainfall or temperature.”
In that case, is it okay to use these products during pregnancy? I didn’t find anything against eating cloudberries during pregnancy though, so hoping that it might be safe to use in skincare too.

You don’t need to worry about them when they’re in extracts, only a few of those have high enough portions of things to worry about and I screen for them (willow bark and licorice root). There’s some discussion buried in here: What about X ingredient in this product??

Yes it’s written like that, and this is actually a food supplement but can also be used externally. I got it from pharmacy. It’s written 45 U.I. 250% is the recommendation of daily intake. I never take it as a food supplement, just used it as a mixture for eyelashes treatment before I got pregnant. So I asked you to know if it’s okay to be used as a skincare during pregnancy.
I was confused by the 250%, I was like… how can it be made up of 250% of something?? LOL
