The Best Gentle Face Washes

The basis of pretty much every skin care routine should be a good facial cleanser. I mention gentle cleansers all the time, and there are cleansers that I mention over and over as good options. They come at multiple price points and all work for pretty much any skin type. Drugstore 1. Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser: This is the most recommended cleanser by dermatologists. It won’t remove your eye makeup so you’ll need a separate remover, but it removes pretty much every thing else. 2. CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser: If your skin is slightly on the drier side, this cleanser is a good alternative to the Cetaphil as it is a little more hydrating. Splurge 3. Fresh Soy Face Cleanser: Feels like and fresh. I think it smells a bit like a cucumber. 4. Philosophy Purity Made Simple Cleanser: This cleanser is my current favorite choice for travel. It has a blend of oils to soothe the skin, but they also remove makeup easily and completely. Of the options on this list it is the one that comes closest to removing all of my waterproof eye makeup. Kate Somerville’s Detox Daily Cleanser Review, A Little Hollywood in Your Day

Kate Somerville is the skincare guru to the stars. Chances are she’s seen and many of the stars in the week before they hit the red carpet. Something about her products just works for my skin, in particular the Detox Daily Cleanser. To the point that I once purchased a lifetime supply, and I’m slowly using it all up (I’ve gotten through about 4 of those huge bottles since buying them). The Detox Daily Cleanser is definitely my go-to face wash, but it isn’t perfect for everyone. What makes it not a cleanser for everyone is the main surfactant, Sodium Laureth Sulfate which can be harsh for those with very sensitive skin or overly drying for those with dry skin. Notice that the formulation also includes hydroxy acids (Beta: Salicyclic Acid, Alpha: Citric, Glycolic and Lactic Acids) to help exfoliation and cell turn over. While I wouldn’t call this a cleanser gentle enough for everyone, I definitely liked this cleanser for my combination skin. If you use nothing else on your skin, I know you do use a cleanser! There is a huge array of products out on the market, with many different price points, different additives and different formulations. Here I’ll be reviewing how soap and cleansers work to clean your skin. Pretty much all how soap and cleansers work this way, whether it is Dawn Dish Soap or a super expensive facial cleanser from Chanel. Quick, read the epidermis post if you haven’t yet (or re-read it if you have, I added a few things) before we start! How Soap Works All soap and cleansers work the same way, whether a $1 bar of soap or a $100 bottle of La Mer cleanser. Really! In order to both get rid of oils, sweat and dirt on the skin while making the whole thing water soluble, surfactants are used. Basically, look at the left side of the picture above. This is the basic soap molecule. There is a long chain of non-polar (neutral) atoms (that part that looks like a tail) and this part is attracted to the dirt, oil, etc. The other end (the polar, or charged end) is attracted to water.…

My New Favorite Facial Cleansing Cloths for Oily Skin: Olay Daily Facials Daily Clean 4-in-1 Water Activated Cleansing Cloth Review

I know what you’re thinking. “Really, do we need yet another face wipe? Are they even any good?” While I go in and out of love with most facial wipes, these ones are different! With most makeup wipes, you are simply wiping your face, and hope that all of your makeup is removed. I promise you that your face gets just as clean (actually, I thought mine was cleaner), but you’ll save a bit of time with fewer steps. Instead of needed my cleanser, an eye makeup remover and an exfoliator each time I wash my face, I only need the cloth. It even leaves Olay conditioners on your skin after rinsing, so my face doesn’t feel tight and uncomfortable after washing. The first thing to notice is that the Daily Facials are actually fairly large. They are dry, you just wet them and the textured wipe lathers up really well. The picture here actually doesn’t do it justice, some of the lather was dripping down the back of my hand by the time I had my camera ready! Why I’m Cleansing Twice: ExfoliKate Cleanser Review

I’ve made no secret of my love of Kate Somerville. She’s the esthetician to the stars in LA, and she has an amazing skin care line. Her products are a bit of a splurge for me, but they’re well worth it. One of my all time favorite products is her ExfoliKate, a green scrub that takes only a minute to work! It leaves my skin smooth and glowy, a tube of this stuff lives in my shower all time. I probably use it about once or twice a week, depending upon how my skin is doing. You can read my original ExfoliKate review, check out my 5 year blog anniversary ode to ExoliKate (which was 5 years ago now), or buy it from Sephora, Nordstrom or Kate Somerville. It is no secret that I’m pressed for time. When I actually have time, it is pretty easy for me to take 2 hours to get ready to run to the grocery store. Natural Beauty Section Picks for the Summer

Have you noticed that the “natural beauty” section at your local big box store is slowly (or not so slowly) expanding? What you could once only find at Whole Foods (which, by the way, has a pretty amazing beauty area) is now available at Target, Walmart and CVS. But, which products are worth picking up? I’ve only just started to explore those beauty areas, but so far I have found some great products! Here are some of my favorites for summer. 1. Jason Gentle Basics Facial Cleanser (from Amazon) This is a great, basic cleanser. It is very gentle, takes off pretty much everything and doesn’t overstrip my face of natural oils. This is extra important after being out in the sun, my skin just doesn’t need another source of irritation! 2. Jason Gentle Basics Day Lotion (get it from Amazon) This is a lightweight, very basic and non-irritating lotion for under makeup. Note, you do still need to add a sunscreen over this. This is one that I’ll be recommending year round. 3. Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Cream (from Amazon) My skin needs a little extra pampering if I’ve been outside a lot. A Warming Makeup Removal Plate?? Panasonic Micro-Foaming Facial Cleansing Device Review

I’m a big fan of a great cleansing brush. Give me any tool to make cleaning my skin more effective and I am going to be all over that! Most of the ones out there are variations on a theme: nylon or silicone bristles, they either rotate or have sonic vibrations. They all do a much better job of taking off your dirt and makeup than just using your hands, and some offer additional benefits like carrying cases for travel. This cleansing brush is different. And if you’re a skin care junkie, you’re going to love what makes it different. So, this brush. It kind of looks like other deep cleansing facial brushes, doesn’t it? The bristles of the brush are a bit longer (and softer), so it is a very gentle cleaning. If you’re like me and can’t use other cleansing brushes every day because your skin is a little too sensitive (even with the “sensitive” brush head) then this will be a big bonus. My Newest Makeup Remover Obsession: IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Makeup

I’m one of those girls that loves to use new makeup removers. I have about 4 different eye makeup removers on my counter right now. I’m not even exaggerating. It is one of those things that I just love to try a new one each time, and I very rarely buy these products more than once. They need to really WOW me for a repurchase, and that happens maybe every 3-4 years. Recently IT Cosmetics sent me their new Bye Bye Makeup, and I have to tell you that I’m not only planning to repurchase, but I’ll likely be hoarding large quantities of this cleanser in my bathroom! Bye Bye Makeup comes in a large plastic jar, and it looks like a solid balm when you first open it. It is a waxy/oily consistency, and it very easily melts with just the heat from your fingers, it kind of feels like coconut oil, but not as greasy. You spread this on to your dry skin, all over. I even apply it to my eyes, paying special attention to my eyelashes. Just rub it around and you will be amazed at what happens! Almost immediately, even the most stubborn of waterproof…

A Wipe For Every Face: Burt’s Bees Facial Cleansing Wipes

Have you noticed my obsession with trying out every facial cleansing wipe out there. The struggle is real. I must try them all! Recently I tried out the facial cleansing towelettes from Burt’s Bees. They have 5 different types, so there’s one that will fit your skin’s specific needs, rather than just a 1 type for everyone facial cleansing wipe. There are 5 different kind of types, but I’ve really gravitated to 2 of the wipes. The first is the Sensitive Skin formulation. This one is very gentle but still removes everything from my skin. There are a few ingredients to help soothe my irritation-prone skin, including cotton extract (it helps soften skin), rice extract (a moisturizer) and aloe (soothing). I love that I can use it in the morning to freshen up before my makeup, or at night to remove all of my makeup. About 2-3 times a week, I like to switch it up and use the Exfoliating wipes instead of the Sensitive Skin ones. Yes, they are pretty gentle as well, but my skin can’t handle using these every night.
