So one of the last things that I want to do is have my color fade or change because I haven’t taken proper care of it. Amy Akiva, is a Master Colorist at Prince + Broad Salon in New York City, and she’s sharing her favorite must know hair color tips for summer. These easy to follow tricks will save your color, preventing it from fading. 1. Do Not put your hair in the sun! The sun can act like bleach on your hair. It damages the outer layer leading to discoloration, frizzy hair and broken ends. It makes your hair look and feel dry. There are some hair products that contain sunscreen, but I don’t recommend them. Nothing is better than wearing a hat and preventing damage in the first place. 2. Shampoo the roots, not the ends. Condition the ends, not the roots Many people experience oily roots in the summer from all the heat and sweating. One thing to do is put shampoo on your finger tips and rub it at your roots. Before you rinse, hold your ends up so the shampoo does not run…

How to Maintain Your Hair Color: Avoiding Green, Brassy and Faded Color https://www.15minutebeauty.com/maintain-your-hair-color-tips.html https://www.15minutebeauty.com/maintain-your-hair-color-tips.html#comments Wed, 04 Apr 2018 15:00:45 +0000 https://www.15minutebeauty.com/?p=8898 Recently I shared some tips from Brad Johns on how to keep your blonde hair looking great, but note that many of these tips will actually work for other hair colors as well. I thought I would also share my favorite tips and products to maintain your hair color. Currently I color my hair a few shades darker than my natural color, but I was a “blonde” for about 8 years, the brunette is a pretty recent change for me. These product swap outs and treatments will maintain your hair color for weeks longer! No more fading color, brassy or green tints! 1. Prevent Damage from Hair Color Going darker will deposit color onto your hair, and won’t damage it at all. But if you’re going lighter, you can expect to damage your hair with the bleach. For this reason it is usually recommended that you stay within a few shades of your natural color and if you want a more drastic change you should do it gradually. One way you can help prevent damage from bleach is to use Olaplex (more information in this hair mask post). Your stylist can add it directly to the bleach, and there is…

The Ultimate Blonde Hair Tips from Brad Johns https://www.15minutebeauty.com/blonde-hair-tips-brad-johns.html https://www.15minutebeauty.com/blonde-hair-tips-brad-johns.html#comments Wed, 28 Mar 2018 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.15minutebeauty.com/2008/03/ultimate-blonde-advice-from-brad-johns.html This post was originally published back in 2008, but the advice from Brad Johns is just as good today as it was back then. And yes, he is still the favorite colorist of many socialites in New York and Allure Magazine. I’m also sharing some of the best products (from drugstore to salon price points) to help you maintain your perfect blonde! My ultimate blonde is Reese Witherspoon. Just looking at her blonde hair makes me regret changing my color from blonde to brown. But, unless you are naturally this blonde (and so few of us are as we get older), staying this blonde is a huge undertaking. I really do not recommend dramatically changing your hair color without the help of a professional. Really, the investment is well worth it! Lucky for us, we got some great advice for maintaining your blonde hair from Brad Johns, one of the premier colorists in New York City! Brad works long hours maintaining those “Bergdorf Blondes”. Here are his ultimate blonde hair tips. How should you change your hair care routine for the summer months? In the summer months, there are always more environmental stresses on the hair, such as salt water,…

Stretching It Out: Increasing the Time Between Hair Coloring Appointments https://www.15minutebeauty.com/gray-away-stretch-salon-appointments.html https://www.15minutebeauty.com/gray-away-stretch-salon-appointments.html#respond Tue, 17 Oct 2017 17:00:21 +0000 https://www.15minutebeauty.com/?p=8101 I’m one of those people who make their next salon appointment when they’re still at the salon. I make my appointments every 6 weeks. I can’t stretch it to every 7 weeks. My hair grows so fast that at 7 weeks I’ll have a lot of roots showing! If I can’t go right at 6 weeks, I’ll bump it up to a 5 week appointment. I ran into some scheduling issues over the summer. With school out, and my daughter in morning day camps for most of it, there were only a few days that I would be able to schedule my hair appointments. I went 9 weeks between color appointments, and I couldn’t believe how bad my roots were! I admit that I do have a few gray hairs, though not many. Mostly I color my hair a bit darker as it is naturally a blah in between nothing brown-ish color. The new color is dark enough that there is a noticeable difference. To help stretch the time until my salon appointment, I used an amazing root concealer! While it is named Gray Away, note that it will conceal any roots. So, it’s perfect for those times that you…

Something New: Hiding my Roots with Gray Away https://www.15minutebeauty.com/gray-away-root-review.html https://www.15minutebeauty.com/gray-away-root-review.html#comments Tue, 29 Aug 2017 14:30:27 +0000 https://www.15minutebeauty.com/?p=8010 I recently turned 40, which seems a bit daunting when you consider that I started this blog when I was 29. The beauty issues I’m facing now are very different than the issues I was facing back then. One of those issues is gray hair. I only have a few gray hairs, but they’re in easy to notice locations like my hairline and where I typically part my hair. Over time my natural hair color has faded a bit, which I think is much more noticeable than the gray hairs. When my base color and highlights grow out, you can definitely see roots! I’ve been on the hunt for products to help conceal those roots, and I was so happy when I found Gray Away from EVERPRObeauty. It comes in three shades, each featuring self-adjusting color technology, so there will be one that works well for you. The match is really, really good. In person you can’t tell I have roots! I’ve been wearing the Light Brown shade, which adjusts really well with my base color and highlights. There are two versions of Gray Away, a root concealer spray and a root touch-up magnetic powder. They’re both really great, but…

Adventures in Home Hair Coloring: Clairol Root Touch Up Review https://www.15minutebeauty.com/root-touch-up-review.html https://www.15minutebeauty.com/root-touch-up-review.html#comments Thu, 02 May 2013 22:29:00 +0000 https://www.15minutebeauty.com/2013/05/root-touch-up-review.html Product Sent for Review My husband is going to be a bit shocked if he sees this review. Really. I do not color my own hair, I don’t cut it, for the last few years I have even outsourced my primary brown maintenance (though I do a lot in between those every 3-5 week appointments, as seen in this post about how I groom my brows). While I’ve occasionally covered at home hair color on 15 Minute Beauty, it’s mostly been tips from experts on how to get your hair color to look good at home. But, recently Clairol asked if they could send me a kit for their Root Touch Up, which claims to match any in salon color. I was feel a little rooty at the time, though I had an appointment to fix it in less than a week. I decided to give it a shot, and let them send the box. If it went poorly, I had a pro lined up to fix things the next day, right? So, here’s what came in my box. A pair of gloves (thank you!!!!), a mixing bowl, the 2 creams to mix together and a brush. I have color…

Ask a Beauty Blogger: The Truth About Salon vs At Home Hair Dye https://www.15minutebeauty.com/is-at-home-hair-color-bad.html https://www.15minutebeauty.com/is-at-home-hair-color-bad.html#comments Tue, 26 Mar 2013 21:17:00 +0000 https://www.15minutebeauty.com/2013/03/is-at-home-hair-color-bad.html This is something I’ve wonder about as well. How do the dyes used in salons compare to what you use at home? It seems as if a new at home color is released every few months, one would think that the products of 2013 are better than even 5 or 10 years ago. But, when putting heavy duty chemicals on the hair, there’s definitely a lot of ways to mess it up! I decided to ask someone trained in this, my hair stylist from California, the woman I miss dearly (my hair stylist here in Michigan is good, but she just isn’t Shannon), and if I could afford it I would really, truly fly to California every 6 weeks to see Shannon. She is that nice of a person and that good. Shannon Ely works at Salon TM2 in Irvine, if you go and see her tell her I say hi! While Shannon isn’t specifically a colorist (she does other stuff too), she does good color, one of the reasons I love her so much! Here’s what Shannon had to say: The over the counter hair color has come a long way and if you are truly using it as…

Ask David: Will Coloring My Hair Affect it… Forever? https://www.15minutebeauty.com/hair-color-long-term-effects.html https://www.15minutebeauty.com/hair-color-long-term-effects.html#comments Fri, 04 May 2012 19:30:00 +0000 https://www.15minutebeauty.com/2012/05/ask-david-will-coloring-my-hair-affec.html   I am so scared to dye my hair and I was wondering if dying my hair a lighter or darker color (I am currently light brown) will change my texture and color FOREVER…. obviously it will change it immediately, but will it have long term effects? -Marla First, nothing is forever, after you dye it new hair will grow. You need to have healthy hair before you can have great color. I’m a big fan of depositing color. This will add more health, you’re adding molecules into the hair instead of stripping something from your hair. This can help to restore the hair’s natural strength. Anytime you are bleaching, whether that is highlighting or all over color, you are stripping color from the hair. The result is that the natural integrity of the hair is jeopardized. Highlighting hair will definitely cause more damage than color because you’re stripping color from the hair rather than putting something in the hair with color depositing. -David So, no long term effects. But color will always look best on healthy hair. Coloring your hair can damage it, especially if you are intending to go lighter. Consider going darker instead! David L Hensley is…
