I see you have the B3 Super Foods Stress Repair Cream on the safe list, but see on Dr. Dennis Gross website it lists salicylic acid as a key ingredient. Wasn’t sure if it’s still considered safe or not? Thank you!

This happens a lot where a brand will call out a “key ingredient” but there are actually natural correlates in extracts. There’s only a few extracts you need to avoid (willow bark and licorice root mostly), the full ingredients are below and since salicylic acid isn’t mentioned as a chemical additive it’s still safe to use.

B3Adaptive SuperFoods™ Microcapsule Complex*, Water/Aqua/Eau, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil*, Ethylhexyl Palmitate*, Propanediol, Niacinamide*, Glycerin*, Squalane*, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Fruit Extract*, Actinidia Chinensis (Kiwi) Fruit Extract*, Cordyceps Sinensis (Mushroom) Extract*, Terminalia Ferdinandiana (Kakadu Plum) Fruit Extract*, Lycium Barbarum (Goji) Fruit Extract*, Lepidium Meyenii (Maca) Root Extract*, Phyllanthus Emblica (Amla) Fruit Extract*, Euterpe Oleracea (Açaí) Sterols*, Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Oil*, Pleiogynium Timoriense (Burdekin Plum) Fruit Extract*, Grifola Frondosa (Maitake Mushroom) Extract*, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Extract*, Podocarpus Elatus (Illawarra Plum) Fruit Extract*, Inonotus Obliquus (Chaga Mushroom) Extract*, Perilla Frutescens Extract*, Withania Somnifera (Ashwagandha) Root Extract*, Asparagus Racemosus (Shatavari) Root Extract*, Rhodiola Rosea Root Extract*, Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate*, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Oil*, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus (Lemongrass) Oil*, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil*, Linoleic Acid*, Linolenic Acid*, Oleic Acid*, Lecithin*, Lysolecithin*, Hydrogenated Phosphatidylcholine*, Beta-Sitosterol*, Phospholipids, Sphingolipids, Colloidal Oatmeal, Ceramide NG, Adenosine, Sodium PCA, Ethylhexylglycerin, Panthenol, Allantoin, Tocopherol, Lactic Acid, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Phytic Acid, Cyclodextrin, Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Polyacrylate-13, Polyisobutene, Polysorbate 20, Maltodextrin, Sorbitan Isostearate, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate

Definitely while pregnant, I’m not sure about breastfeeding. Likely I would to be on the safe side, but when I’m not sure I just avoid. I also have tried a bunch of the LED masks out there and haven’t found much benefit, so I would personally pass.

    Hello
Thank you so much for all your researches, profound explanations and for your passion. Incredible Webpage!!! Really helps me a lot, as I am pregnant and very interested in using safe products during pregnancy.

I use Caudalie, Zelens (you did not check this brand yet) and Dr. Dennis Gross (Superfood). Following questions:

    1. Will you also make researches on Zelens-Products? I use several products and not sure if pregnancy safe or not.
    2. I am interested to know whether the amount of a particular ingredient (e.g. retinol, licorice root, glycolic acid etc. is relevant to classify a product as “not safe” during pregnancy? According to several doctors I spoke to, the amount (less than 7%; 2%) is key and hence, not harmful. Indeed, the Superfood Serum from Dr. Dennis Gross which I am using daily has licorice root…

    What is your opinion?

    • 4.21.21
      Christine said:

I’ve just added Zelens to my to do list, I haven’t heard of them before.

The % ingredient is a bit controversial in the medical community, some think it matters, many think it does not. I’m one of the latter. There’s discussion here: But what about this % of an ingredient?

      • 4.21.21
        Ocean said:

Thank you so much for adding Zelens on the list. You will love it (I am absolutely fond of the products).

I agree with you, it is a bit controversial.

I read that most AHAs are considered unsafe in pregnancy. This is why I switched from an AHA chemical exfoliation to an alternative physical exfoliator. Glycolic acid is an AHA that is considered safe to use in pregnancy. My doctor said that I need to choose a glycolic acid that is 7% concentration or lower for safe use in pregnancy. Lactic acid is another AHA that is safe in pregnancy. Again, my doctor said to choose a modest concentration of the acid. He recommends 5% concentration or lower in pregnancy.

So you suggest to be consequent and to avoid e.g. Dr. Dennis Gross Eye Cream and Serum (Superfood), correct?

        Best wishes,
        Ocean

          Christine said:

This is something that’s somewhat controversial, but not all physicians consider glycolic acid to be safe in pregnancy. It’s highly absorbed (we have documented 28%, which is super high) and we don’t have safety info and we know it reaches the baby. So many think that glycolic acid does need to be avoided. Lactic acid is already made by the body (I check levels frequently in my patients for various reasons). So I would avoid glycolic acid completely.
Some discussion here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

Christine, thank you so much for your support! I will send back the products I bought newly from Dr. Dennis Gross. The ones from Zelens I wont use until I hopefully read your reviews.

What about mosquito repellents during pregnancy? It’s a huge topic for pregnant women. Might be interesting for you to research. I researched last night…haven’t found anything safe.

            All the best!

They vary regionally even within the US. So I review ingredients of those when people ask, but I don’t have time to go and research them on my own, it’s too much variation.

I would avoid this in pregnancy and nursing due to the bakuchiol. It also has glycolic acid to avoid in pregnancy.
