I’ve written about my favorite concealers before, shared the favorite concealers of beauty bloggers, and even my favorite concealers specifically for the undereye area. The most recent of those posts was only in June of 2016, but it’s actually out of date already. Why? Because it turns out that concealers for over 40 are a bit different.
I’ve really changed up how I utilize concealers over the last year or so, you can read more about that in my Best Concealer Hacks for Undereye Bags and Circles post.
The gist of it is that as I’ve gotten older, I’ve found that less really is more.
I don’t have wrinkles under my eyes, but a super pigmented undereye concealer sure can make me look like I do! So I’ve moved from more pigmented concealers to ones that are more liquid, easier to blend in to my skin and less likely to cake and look wrinkly.
The Best Undereye Concealer for over 40
I can not use a super pigmented, thick concealer under my eyes any more. I just can not, it creates wrinkles that aren’t there and it makes me look more tired and older. Nope, all the nopes. So, I now look for a medium coverage concealer that can be layered for more coverage. I need it to be very blendable, and I don’t want it to cake or look bad by mid-day.
My two favorites are NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer and Bobbi Brown Instant Full Cover Concealer. I find that the NARS is slightly easier to blend, but they are very, very similar.
CoverGirl Outlast All-Day Soft Touch Concealer is a great lower cost alternative, LA Girl HD Pro Concealer is also similar but slightly less pigmented I think.
Tarte’s Shape Tape is a slightly fuller coverage concealer, but it is also a bit thicker and not quite as blendable. Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer is a little less pigmented than NARS and Bobbi Brown, but also blends great and wears well throughout the day.
The Best Mixing Concealers
My former favorite undereye concealers were thick and super pigmented. And they’re still in my drawer. Rather than using them for under my eyes, I’ve been mixing them with other products, so they are multipurpose.
A little concealer with lotion or BB Cream can create a custom blend, I can adjust the coverage as I want and make any face moisturizer into a BB Cream. I like to add in Cover FX Custom Blot Drops to make the end result mattifying.
My favorites for this are It Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye (regular and Illuminating) and Cover FX Cream Concealer.
The Best Mid-Day Touch Up Concealer
Sometimes, despite my best efforts, about 4 pm I start to look a bit tired again.
I know you’ve been there too!
Just a touch of concealer on the dark areas under my eyes (not in that entire triangle), blend it in with a fingertip, and I look much better! My favorite concealer for this is the Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit. It is too thick for me to blend easily all over, but I’ve found that it’s perfect for just that mid-day touchup. I love that the compact also has a little pressed powder. I use that with my finger as well.
PR Samples, Affiliate Links
The It Cosmetics concealers have been sent to me previously as PR samples, though I’ve repurchased them on my own multiple times. I bought the other products with my own money.
I tried the Nars concealer a while back, and I was so disappointed in it. It was so drying under my eyes. I have very few lines, and it just caked up really bad! It was so sad! I really like using the Urban Decay Naked Concealer for under my eyes now!
