I noticed that you have listed the “Pure Enzymes Cranberry Exfoliating Mask: Gluconolactone” as pregnancy safe, but the word Gluconolactone is in bold. Since that ingredient is also listed in bold below under the NOT SAFE list, I just wanted to double check whether the Pure Enzymes Cranberry Exfoliating Mask is still safe. Why is the word Gluconolactone called out in that listing?
Thank you so much for this incredible resource, it is very much appreciated!
That’s my fault, I make these lists in HTML for various reasons, and sometimes the view is cluttered and things aren’t quite in the right order. I paste in the name, immediately type what I saw was an issue, then go back and copy and paste the link for it and create the link. I must have thought I was under ok for nursing but not pregnancy, I’ve just moved it down to the right area. Thanks!
Hi I’m not sure if the ingredients have changed but can you please review the opti crystal all again. I am concerned about the “neem flower”. Cholesteryl Oleyl Carbonate, Cholesteryl Nonanoate, Cholesteryl Stearate, Phenyl t-Butylnitrone (Spin Trap), Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Zea Mays (Corn) Silk Extract, Eclipta Prostrata Extract, Melia Azadirachta (Neem) Leaf Extract, Moringa Pterygosperma Seed Oil, Melia Azadirachta (Neem) Flower Extract, Amino Esters-1, Coccinia Indica Fruit Extract, Solanum Melongena (Eggplant) Fruit Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Flower Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Lawsonia Inermis (Henna) Extract, Ocimum Sanctum Leaf Extract, Ocimum Basilicum (Basil) Leaf Extract, Curcuma Longa (Tumeric) Root Extract, Corallina Officinalis Extract, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Juice, Thioctic (R-lipoic) Acid, Copper Gluconate, Glycerin, Potassium Sorbate, Alcohol Denat.
This is fine for pregnancy and nursing.
I was previously concerned about Neem (so, you’re not crazy!), but after discussions with a few OBs I took it off of my list of ingredients to avoid. Some discussion here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
Hi there! I saw the restorative age serum as Prego safe but it has salicylic acid in it I think?
No, it doesn’t if you look at the ingredient list (in order to count it needs to be listed as a separate ingredient, sometimes those things are in extracts). I did just notice gluconolactone in the formulation, which either I didn’t notice before or it wasn’t listed? Regardless, it should go under ok for nursing and not pregnancy
Hi,
Thank you so much for all this research. I am wondering why the Rescue Hydrating Balm is marked as not safe for pregnancy. I can’t find anywhere that mandelic acid is unsafe for pregnancy. Thanks in advance.
It’s an AHA, info here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
Is Malic Acid a concern as well?
Yes
Hi Doc,
I want to double check if the ingredient glycine soja oil in the Purity Solution Nourishing Deep Cleansing Oil was a safe ingredient? as I was told to be aware of this ingredient
Thank you very much
It’s fine, this is everything you need to worry about: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
Follow up question — is the retinyl palmitate in this product (Purity Solution Nourishing cleansing oil) okay as it’s delivered in an oil? Thank you! This guide is amazing.
Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate, Moringa Oleifera (Pterygosperma) Seed Oil, Aleurites Moluccana (Kukui)Seed Oil, Argania Spinosa Kernel (Argan) Oil, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Retinyl Palmitate, Melia Azadirachta (Neem) Leaf Extract, Melia Azadirachta (Neem) Flower Extract, Amber Powder, Corallina Officianlis Extract, Coccinia Indica Fruit Extract, Solanum Melongena (Eggplant) Fruit Extract, Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Leaf Extract, Ocimum Sanctum Leaf Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Limonene, Propanediol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Caprylyl Glycol, Caprylhydroxamic Acid.
No, I think it was reformulated. My list is 2 years old and my link is old. I put it under the correct area for now. I’m constantly updating posts, but I’m in the B’s now so I’ll get to it soon (i’m actually on family vacation now answering comments, people were starting to get borderline rude because I took a few days off, but I’ll restart updating posts when I get home next week)
The Benefit Balance Antioxidant Infused Toning Mist contains HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA (WITCH HAZEL) WATER, which is the source of salicylic acid and couldn’t be considered safe.
Salicylic acid within extracts and oils is considered safe. Witch hazel is also considered safe. It is when salicylic acid is of a higher percent and included independently in the ingredient list that you need to worry about it.
Hi there! I would so appreciate your opinion on this retinol alternative product; BAKUCHIOL COMPLETE PLANT-BASED RETINOL ALTERNATIVE SERUM
HELIANTHUSANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED OIL/HELIANTHUS ANNUUS SEED OIL, COCO-CAPRYLATE/CAPRATE, SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS (JOJOBA) SEED OIL, SQUALANE, BAKUCHIOL, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, ECLIPTA PROSTRATA EXTRACT, MELIA AZADIRACHTA LEAF EXTRACT, MELIA AZADIRACHTA FLOWER EXTRACT, CORALLINA OFFICINALIS EXTRACT, COCCINIA INDICA FRUIT EXTRACT, MORINGA OLEIFERA SEED OIL, SOLANUM MELONGENA (EGGPLANT) FRUIT EXTRACT, ALOE BARBADENSIS FLOWER EXTRACT, CURCUMA LONGA (TURMERIC) ROOT EXTRACT, OCIMUM BASILICUM (BASIL) FLOWER/LEAF EXTRACT, OCIMUM SANCTUM LEAF EXTRACT.
I screen bakuchiol as a retinoid, Avoid in pregnancy and in nursing if you’re conservative
Hi, thanks for the great info! I don’t see the following on your list (unless I missed it somehow…) – thoughts? BAKUCHIOL COMPLETE PLANT-BASED RETINOL ALTERNATIVE SERUM
I used your website constantly during my pregnancy and now with nursing – you provide a great service, thank you!
I need a full ingredient list to review products, but with bakuchiol this will end up under avoid in pregnancy and nursing.
Could you let me know if this is safe for use during pregnancy?

Hi! Thank you SO much for all of the work you do here. As someone who has struggled with skin for two decades, it is really wonderful to have this resource! Cosmedix updated their ingredients for Mystic Hydrating Treatment. I’m wondering what your thoughts are on it for nursing. Thank you!

When I asked cosmedix for a list of their products that were pregnancy safe they listed affirm as potentially unsafe because it has glycine soja. Is this an ingredient I should be concerned about?
Thanks so much for your time!
That’s a new one, I’ve never heard of being worried about that ingredient. It’s not considered an ingredient to avoid by the medical community. My list of ingredients that I screen out is very conservative and it’s here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
Also, this: Why does X Brand say this product is safe but you don’t think it is safe? (or Vice Versa)
Ok, Thank you!

I’m iffy on that Bipheylazepany methanone, which isn’t an ingredient I’ve ever seen before. I googled and found this:
https://www.dsm.com/personal-care/en_US/products/skin-bioactives/bel-even.html#
Cortisol is the stress hormone and has a wide range of effects. And it is NOT released in the skin, and it can’t be released by your adrenals and only target the skin. I don’t think cortisol is necessarily helpful for the skin, but given all of the effects throughout the body I’d avoid this while both nursing and pregnant.
Thank you! Your site is beyond informational.
