Question about naturally occurring salicylates from food sources – like squalane oil derived from olives which are high in salicylates – is this still safe?? Or is just chemical salicylates that are dangerous during pregnancy?

I have read that glycolics and AHAs in facial cleansers are safe to use durong pregnancy, I am curious about the not safe products–Indie Lee for example, are you listing the Banish Stick and Clearing Mask as not safe because of the salicylic acid, or both ingredients?

Hi, Thankyou for all the useful information. I notice that some of the products have vitamin a in them and are still recommended it from rosehip oil or strawberry seed oil. What is the difference between these vitamin a sources and retinol and their safety on a developing baby and infants (pregnancy and nursing)?

    Thankyou

    • 8.27.19
      15mins said:

Those sources aren’t “retinoids”, they’re natural vitamin A’s such as beta-carotene and are regarded as safe. They’re also found in those products/extracts, but in general those have a much lower % just in the extract than a purified source, that’s why we tend to ignore them. There’s more on rosehip in my post on pregnancy ingredients to avoid.

Hi, I see the gentle daily peel & banish stick are safe for use during pregnancy. However, looking into the ingredients on the website the gentle daily peel says it has “wintergreen derived BHAs”. Same for the banish stick, also has wintergreen and says plainly it has salicylic acid in its highlight. Is there a reason why they are on the “ok” list that I may be missing? Thanks – overhauling my skin care routine (avid user of medical grade skincare products) and finding it a lot to figure out and your website is so helpful!

It’s weird, it’s not listed under the “key ingredients” link but it’s now listed under ingredients towards the bottom of the page.

On Ulta’s website, it’s not listed but they advertise it as containing licorice root in the description, which is what caught my attention. It’s very confusing though because I purchased the product and it’s not listed on the box as an ingredient. Something doesn’t seem right on their end!

I reached out to their customer service again today since their response seemed inconsistent, and the person I spoke to said that they just realized that licorice root was missing from the ingredients list. They are in touch with Ulta about updating their website and the Indie Lee website has been updated (so I’m told). Current product boxes are considered a misprint as licorice root is missing from the ingredients list and will be corrected on the next product run. A disappointing error on their end, I was hoping to try the cream!
