Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Burt’s Bees

Pregnancy Safe Skincare from Burt's Bees

Pregnancy safe skincare can be super difficult and confusing. I have an entire guide devoted to what products are safe to use while pregnant including information on what ingredients to avoid while pregnant and a huge list of pregnancy safe skincare products. The list has gotten so large that I’ve decided to start listing brands in their own individual posts.

Here you’ll find every pregnancy safe skincare product from Burt’s Bees as of 2/27/2022. If it is not safe, I’ll tell you why. All of the products meet my pregnancy safe criteria. If they release a new product that is not listed here, please comment below and I will add it. Note I will link to every product directly to avoid confusion. You’ll know exactly which product I mean.

I’ve reviewed this entire line and have only included the pregnancy safe products so far. I’ll expand eventually to tell you why i didn’t like the others, but I haven’t had a chance yet with Burt’s Bees. But if it isn’t included here then I didn’t think it was safe for pregnancy.

Both of those ingredients are ok, but I’ve hesitated to add it here because the 3 tubes I checked (all the same kind) all had different ingredient lists?? What??

        Debbie Miller said:

I was just coming to ask about the regular beeswax. I’ve been using it for years and while pregnant since I saw it was on the “ok” list. All of the tubes I have show linalool and eugenol as the last two ingredients but these don’t show in this product on the BB website. The rest of the ingredients match. Are those two ingredients okay?

    Hi Christine,

Can you say anything more about the first ingredient “ricinus communis (castor) seed oil”? I’m a little paranoid about that given that castor oil can be used to induce labor. Is your view that this is a safe ingredient in the amounts in these products? I just recently purchased Burts Bees Sunny Day 221 100% Natural lip gloss, where it’s the first ingredient, and two lipsticks (Satin Lipstick 510 Blush Basin, Glossy Lipstick 504 Nude Rain) where it is the second ingredient, after diheptyl succinate (Satin) and capryloyl glycerin/sebaric acid coploymer (Glossy). It is also found as the 6th ingredient in a product you marked as safe above, Intense Hydration Night Cream. (Thank you, your site has been a godsend!)

          15mins said:

You actually need to take quite a bit by mouth to induce labor, a little topically won’t do it.

Hi I found this article when I was looking to make sure that the intense hydration cream and mask were safe since it has clary sage in it. I was reading that clary sage oil can cause uterine contractions and has been used to induce labor but can cause miscarriage if used too early in the pregnancy. So why is the that safe in the cream and mask? TIA!

You need massive quantities to induce, it’s impossible to do that topically basically. I’ve asked a few OBs about it and they agreed with me.

Hi, I’m wondering about the Burt’s Bees cucumber and sage facial towelettes. I’ve heard you should avoid sage in pregnancy. I know you already responded to a post about clary sage, would the sage in the face wipes be safe then because it’s in small quantities ? Here is the list of ingredients. Thanks.
Ingredients: aqua (water, eau), aloe barbadensis leaf juice, polyglyceryl-4 caprate, cucumis sativus (cucumber) fruit extract, salvia offcinalis (sage) leaf extract, tocopherol, citric acid, xanthan gum, dicaprylyl carbonate, caprylyl/capryl glucoside, glycerin, glycine soja (soybean) oil, benzyl alcohol, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, parfum (natural fragrance), phenoxyethanol, hydroxycitronellal, citronellol, amyl cinnamal.

You can pretty much find info out there about avoiding everything possible, much of which isn’t based on much. It’s not considered an ingredient to avoid by the medical community. My list of ingredients that I screen out is very conservative and it’s here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

More info on the extracts/oils in my post on ingredients to avoid during pregnancy. Unless a specific issue is found, the studies that would really prove safety can’t be done, they’re unethical. Most extracts/oils are fine, but there are concerns specifically for Neem and Willow Bark, so I recommend avoiding those. Typically in a mixture of oils or products like this, there isn’t enough to worry about things too much, but I wouldn’t recommend applying a large amount of tea tree oil at one time for example.

Pregnancy is also considered a “sensitizing” time, meaning you will have reactions to products you’ve been fine with before, and that reaction will possibly persist after delivery. For that reason I recommend avoiding products with a lot of extracts and botanicals, many of them have limited proven benefits (other than they are “natural” and it makes us feel better about that). When possible, go for shorter ingredient lists if possible, it’s easier to sort out what you reacted to later on. I hope that makes sense. In the scheme of things, both of these products have “shorter” lists, you should see some of the products I review! Both of these lists look safe to me.

      I hope that helps!

I reviewed the ingredient list on the Burt’s Bees website. I’ve frequently found errors on the Amazon page listings, so I don’t trust those.

This is the list for those towelettes that I just now pulled from the brand website:
Ingredients: aqua (water, eau), glycerin, decyl oleate, oleyl erucate, caprylic/capric triglyceride, coco-caprylate, hibiscus sabdari¬a flower extract, pyrus malus (apple) fruit extract, rubus idaeus (raspberry) seed oil, citrullus lanatus (watermelon) fruit extract, lens esculenta (lentil) fruit extract, vaccinium myrtillus fruit extract, adansonia digitata fruit extract, scutellaria alpina flower/leaf/stem extract, citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) fruit extract, citrus medica limonum (lemon) fruit extract, acer saccharum (sugar maple) extract, salix nigra (willow) bark extract, beta vulgaris (beet, extrait de racine de betterave) root extract, saccharum o cinarum (sugar cane, extrait de canne á sucre) extract, hydrolyzed corn starch, sodium PCA, ribose, lysolecithin, sclerotium gum, pullulan, glycine soja (soybean) oil, xanthan gum, polyglyceryl-4 caprate, arginine, dipotassium glycyrrhizate, sodium phytate, tocopherol, lactic acid, citric acid, p-anisic acid, alcohol denat., sodium lactate, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, parfum (fragrance)*, phenoxyethanol, eugenol, limonene, linalool *natural fragrance

I have bolded the willow bark (considered a salicylate) and the dipotassium glycyrrhizate, which is a derivative of licorice root. I would personally avoid these while pregnant, but use them while nursing.

Yes, though note that babies can react to a LOT of things you put on them. I recommend going with Desitin instead of Burt’s Bees due to the high number of extracts in this, it’s a set up for some sort of reaction. The fewer the extracts the better for babies.

Hello! Your posts are so helpful! Question about the Mama Bee Belly Butter… I was reading online that Shea butter naturally contains lots of vitamin A and E. Is this ok since it’s naturally occurring? I noticed it’s on your pregnancy safe list and tons of pregnancy products contain Shea butter.

    Thanks!

Hi I’m looking at Burt Bee’s Renewal Firming Day Lotion with SPF. On this list it’s showing as not safe for nursing but on the Pregnancy Safe Daily Moisturizers with SPF list it’s showing as pregnancy safe. Or at least the links for both take m to the same product, so I’m guessing it’s the same product unless something changed. Anyway, on here it shows as no safe due to Licorice Root. I do not see that as an ingredient. Could you tell me if this is safe for pregnancy:
Active Ingredients: Titanium Dioxide (2.53%) and Zinc Oxide (11.9%)
Inactive Ingredients: water, glycerin, caprylic/capric triglyceride, decyl oleate, isoamyl cocoate, isoamyl laurate, cetyl alcohol, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, polyglyceryl-2 dipolyhydroxystearate, fragrance*, polyglyceryl-4 caprate, glyceryl stearate citrate, stearic acid, tocopherol, beeswax, citrullus lanatus (watermelon) fruit extract, lens esculenta (lentil) fruit extract, pyrus malus (apple) fruit extract, glycine soja (soybean) oil, adansonia digitata fruit extract, hibiscus sabdariffa flower extract, scutellaria alpina flower/leaf/stem extract, trifolium pratense (clover) leaf extract, phragmites communis extract, poria cocos extract, sorbitan stearate, behenylalcohol, isostearic acid, polyhydroxystearic acid, ribose, sodium carboxymethyl C10-16 alkyl glucoside, stearyl alcohol, alumina, lecithin, polyglyceryl-3 polyricinoleate, lauryl glucoside, magnesium aluminum silicate, xanthan gum, citric acid, bisabolol, dipotassium glycyrrhizate, sodium phytate, sodium lactate, sorbic acid, sodium PCA, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, alcohol, phenoxyethanol

No, there’s likely a reformulation in there somewhere. Round ups don’t get updated often, it’s too hard to hunt down every product as I update brand lists.

Hi I have a few questions about burts products. I am currently 7 weeks pregnant. On the website for pregnancy safe and not pregnancy safe products it says the regular burts lip balm is safe, but it has rosemary in it which Ive read on several sources is supposed to be avoided when pregnant. It also says vanilla bean is not safe bc of licorice root, but when I look at ingredients I don’t even see it on there. Have the ingredients changed since the website came out? And is the original safe or not? I only use burts on my lips and now that Im pregnant Im afraid to use anything, so Im just trying ro be thorough before using anything regularly. My lips are starting to crack. Please let me k ow your thoughts. Thank you

      Christine said:

You can pretty much find info out there about avoiding everything possible, much of which isn’t based on much. Rosemary is not considered an ingredient to avoid by the medical community. My list of ingredients that I screen out is very conservative and it’s here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

These are the ingredients of the Vanilla Bean Lip Balm:
Ingredients: helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, beeswax (cera alba), flavor (aroma ), ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, lanolin, ammonium glycyrrhizate, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, canola oil (huile de colza), glycine soja (soybean) oil, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter, tocopherol, vanilla planifolia fruit extract, vanilla tahitensis fruit extract.

The licorice root in the the vanilla bean is under its chemical name, ammonium glycyrrhizate.

If your lips are cracked I would look more at something super hydrating like Laneige overnight lip mask or just plain vaseline.
