Hello, I just had a question about the Vanicream Moisturizing Lotion. The ingredients are listed as the following:
purified water, petrolatum, propylene glycol, cetearyl alcohol, sorbitol, ceteareth-20, simethicone, glyceryl stearate, PEG-30 stearate, sorbic acid, BHT
However, I was wondering if petrolatum, propylene gylcol, PEGs, and BHT are safe for pregnancy since I’ve read that petrolatum should be avoided during pregnancy, propylene glycol is a penetration enhancer and surfactant that is classified as a skin irritant, PEGs are silicone thickening agents classified as a toxicant that may interfere with fetal growth, and BHT are synthetic antioxidants used to extend shelf life. They are carcinogenic, disrupt hormones, and can cause liver damage. I’d love to know your thoughts on this product and I’d truly appreciate it if you could please let me know! Thank you so much!

You can pretty much find info out there about avoiding everything possible, much of which isn’t based on much. My list of ingredients that I screen out is very conservative and it’s here: skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy. If I don’t include an ingredient on that list (which is every one you’ve listed) I don’t think that the actual evidence in the medical literature and my discussions with other physicians mean you should avoid an ingredient. It’s worth mentioning that dumping a very large amount of an ingredient into a petri dish doesn’t mean much when that ingredient can’t even be absorbed through the skin (and the skin’s main function is to be a barrier. And it’s good at it.)
